Cross-Register Variation in Nominalisation Across Academic Disciplines: A Corpus-Based Study of Academic Writing Genres and Functions

Abstract

This study investigates cross-register variation in nominalisation frequency and function across academic disciplines, examining how nominalised constructions contribute to the organization and expression of disciplinary knowledge. Drawing on systemic functional linguistics (Halliday, 1994; Halliday & Matthiessen, 2004), register theory (Biber & Conrad, 2009), and academic discourse studies (Hyland, 2000), the research explores the interaction between disciplinary conventions and register-specific communicative purposes. A 3-million-word corpus was compiled from four academic registers—research articles, textbooks, PhD dissertations, and student essays—across four disciplines: physics, history, economics, and linguistics. Quantitative analyses were conducted to identify the frequency and distribution of nominalisations, while qualitative functional analysis examined their discourse roles within different disciplinary and register contexts. The findings reveal significant variation in nominalisation density across both disciplines and registers. Research articles in physics exhibit the highest frequency of nominalisation, reflecting the discipline’s preference for highly condensed and abstract representations of scientific processes and relationships. In contrast, student essays in history display the lowest nominalisation density, favoring more explicit and narrative-oriented forms of expression. Across all disciplines, nominalisation frequency increases with the level of academic expertise and specialization, with research articles and doctoral dissertations demonstrating substantially greater use than textbooks and student writing. Functional analysis indicates that nominalisation performs several important discourse functions, including information compression, theme progression, abstraction of processes into entities, and management of textual coherence. However, the relative prominence of these functions varies according to disciplinary epistemology and register demands. The study contributes to corpus linguistics, systemic functional theory, and academic discourse research by providing empirical evidence of how nominalisation patterns reflect both disciplinary knowledge construction and register-specific communicative goals. The findings also offer practical implications for academic writing instruction and genre-based pedagogy in higher education.
