Institutional Voids and Adaptive Management Practices in Developing Economies: A Quantitative Study of Firm Performance Across Four Countries

This study examines the role of institutional voids in shaping managerial practices and organizational performance in developing economies through a quantitative analysis of firms operating in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, and Kenya. Drawing on Institutional Void Theory (Khanna & Palepu, 2010) and classical Institutional Theory (North, 1990), the research investigates how firms adapt management practices in contexts characterized by weak formal institutions, limited market intermediaries, and inconsistent regulatory enforcement. Data were collected from 100 managerial respondents across diverse business sectors, focusing on adaptive strategies employed to navigate institutional deficiencies. The findings indicate that a substantial majority of managers (84%) reported modifying imported Western management practices to better suit local institutional environments. Relationship-based governance structures were found to substitute for formal contract-based mechanisms in 72% of reported business transactions, highlighting the centrality of interpersonal trust in organizational functioning. Additionally, 62% of respondents indicated that informal trust networks serve as primary sources of critical business information, replacing formal institutional channels. A multiple regression analysis reveals that institutional void severity (β = 0.38), strength of informal networks (β = 0.28), and adaptive management capability (β = 0.26) collectively explain 46% of the variance in firm performance. Comparative analysis further shows that firms actively engaging in creative institutional adaptation outperform those that passively respond to institutional deficiencies by approximately 34%, underscoring the strategic value of adaptive capacity in volatile environments. The study contributes to management science and organizational theory by demonstrating how institutional voids are not merely constraints but also catalysts for innovation in managerial practice. It offers empirical evidence on the mechanisms through which firms in developing economies construct alternative governance systems to sustain performance under institutional uncertainty.
