This study examines herd mentality in venture capital (VC) investment decisions through a quantitative investigation of VC professionals evaluating standardized startup pitches under manipulated social proof conditions. The sample consists of 100 VC professionals who assessed identical investment opportunities while being exposed to varying levels of perceived peer investor interest. Grounded in Social Proof Theory (Cialdini, 2009) and Information Cascades Theory (Bikhchandani et al., 1992), the research explores the cognitive and social mechanisms that drive convergence in investment decision-making under uncertainty. Findings indicate that awareness of prominent VC interest significantly increases investment willingness, even when underlying pitch information remains constant. Specifically, social proof cues increased investment propensity by 48% (t = 5.42, p < 0.001), demonstrating the strong influence of peer behavior signals on financial judgment. The magnitude of herding effects varies by domain: effects are strongest in high-uncertainty sectors such as deep tech (β = 0.42) and weaker in more familiar sectors such as SaaS (β = 0.18), suggesting that informational ambiguity amplifies reliance on social cues. Survey data further indicate that 72% of participants acknowledge peer firm interest as a significant factor in their decision-making process. Experimental manipulation shows that requiring independent evaluation prior to exposure to social information reduces herding behavior by 36%, highlighting the role of decision sequencing in mitigating cascade effects. Multiple regression analysis reveals that peer interest visibility (β = 0.38), domain uncertainty (β = 0.28), and fear of missing out intensity (β = 0.24) jointly explain 44% of the variance in herding behavior. The study contributes to behavioral finance and organizational decision theory by demonstrating how informational cascades shape investment behavior in high-stakes environments and offers practical implications for improving due diligence processes and reducing systematic bias in venture capital decision-making.
