This study examines belongingness threat and defensive consumer behavior during brand crises through a quantitative investigation of brand-loyal consumers exposed to organizational scandals, including product recalls, ethical violations, and CEO controversies. The sample consists of 100 consumers with varying levels of brand identification, enabling comparison between highly identified brand community members and less attached consumers. Grounded in the Belongingness Hypothesis (Baumeister & Leary, 1995) and Brand Community Theory (Muniz & O’Guinn, 2001), the research investigates the psychological mechanisms through which threats to brand-related identity influence defensive cognitive and behavioral responses. Findings indicate that consumers with strong brand identification exhibit significantly higher levels of defensive behavior when confronted with brand crises. Specifically, highly identified consumers demonstrate 44% more defensive responses, including rationalization of brand misconduct, victim-blaming of external actors, and counter-arguing against negative information, compared to low-identification consumers. Individuals in the highest decile of brand identification—conceptualized as “brand tattoo” level attachment—exhibit 3.2 times more brand-defense behaviors, highlighting the intensity of identity-based loyalty mechanisms. Results further reveal that the nature of the crisis moderates defensive responses. Identity-threatening crises involving violations of core brand values generate stronger defensive reactions than competence-based failures such as product defects or service errors. Multiple regression analysis shows that brand identification (β = 0.38), perceived identity threat severity (β = 0.28), and perceived alternative brand availability (β = −0.22) collectively explain 46% of the variance in defensive behavior. The study demonstrates that brand crises operate not only as reputational events but also as identity threats that activate belongingness-driven defense mechanisms. It contributes to behavioral science and consumer psychology by extending belongingness theory into brand crisis contexts and offers practical implications for crisis communication, brand management, and consumer relationship strategies.
