Abstract

The growing adoption of gender-neutral language in English has created significant challenges for translators working into languages with grammatical gender systems. This study investigates the strategies and challenges involved in translating English gender-neutral language into Arabic, French, and German, with particular emphasis on the rendering of non-binary pronouns, generic noun phrases, and institutional communication. The research is informed by Venuti's (1995) translation studies framework, Cameron's (1985) theory of gender and language, Papadopoulos's (2023) work on inclusive language, and linguistic relativity perspectives on grammatical gender proposed by Boroditsky et al. (2003). Employing a mixed-methods design, the study combines corpus analysis of 120 translated institutional documents—including United Nations reports, corporate diversity statements, and government equality documents—with survey responses from 85 professional translators working into Arabic, French, and German. Corpus analysis identified four principal strategies for translating the English singular generic they: masculine default forms (41%), inclusive doubled forms (28%), neologisms or emerging gender-inclusive forms (14%), and circumlocution through syntactic reformulation (17%). Strategy selection varied across target languages and institutional contexts, reflecting differences in grammatical constraints, sociolinguistic norms, and organizational language policies. Survey findings revealed considerable disagreement among translators regarding the most appropriate rendering strategies, with many participants reporting uncertainty about client expectations, inconsistent institutional guidelines, and ethical tensions between preserving source-text inclusivity and conforming to target-language conventions. Translators also identified significant resistance to gender-inclusive linguistic innovation in more conservative governmental and institutional settings, particularly where established grammatical norms or political sensitivities limited the acceptance of non-traditional forms. The findings demonstrate that translating gender-neutral language requires continual negotiation between linguistic structure, cultural expectations, and institutional policy rather than straightforward lexical substitution. The study contributes to translation studies, gender and language research, and institutional communication by providing empirical evidence of current translation practices across three gendered languages. It further argues for the development of explicit translation policies and standardized professional guidelines to promote consistency, inclusivity, and transparency in the translation of gender-neutral language across multilingual institutional contexts.
