Abstract

This study investigates urban youth slang in Karachi, Pakistan, examining its lexical composition, sociolinguistic functions, and role in social identity construction among young people aged 18–28. Drawing on foundational scholarship in slang studies (Eble, 1996; Dumas & Lighter, 1978), sociocultural theories of identity (Bucholtz & Hall, 2004), and research on Pakistani urban multilingualism, the study explores how slang operates as a dynamic linguistic resource within one of South Asia’s most linguistically diverse metropolitan environments. The dataset comprises 150 sociolinguistic interviews and 200 hours of participant-observed peer interaction collected from university campuses, cafés, commercial centers, and public gathering spaces across Karachi’s heterogeneous neighborhoods. Analysis reveals a highly innovative and fluid slang lexicon drawing from multiple linguistic sources, including Urdu, English, Sindhi, Punjabi, and expressions circulating through digital media, online gaming, and social networking platforms. The findings demonstrate that slang functions as a powerful marker of in-group solidarity, enabling speakers to establish affiliation with peer networks while simultaneously distinguishing themselves from outsiders. It also serves as a mechanism for social boundary construction, youth identity performance, humor creation, and symbolic resistance to adult authority, institutional norms, and conventional language expectations. The study further documents the role of code-mixing and lexical borrowing in accelerating slang innovation within multilingual urban contexts. Variations in slang usage are shown to correlate with social background, educational environment, and peer-group affiliation, reflecting the complex interaction between language, class, and urban identity. The research contributes to the documentation of contemporary Pakistani linguistic practices and advances theoretical understanding of youth language as a site of creativity, identity negotiation, and sociocultural change within rapidly evolving urban societies.
