Abstract

This study examines the role of institutional voids in shaping management practices in developing economies through a quantitative investigation of 100 managers working in firms across Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, and Kenya. Grounded in Institutional Void Theory (Khanna & Palepu, 2010) and Institutional Theory (North, 1990), the research explores how deficiencies in formal market-supporting institutions influence managerial behavior, adaptive strategies, and organizational performance. Findings indicate that 84% of managers actively adapt Western management practices to local conditions in order to compensate for weak institutional infrastructures, including ineffective contract enforcement, underdeveloped market intermediaries, and reliance on informal governance systems. Relationship-based management was found to substitute for contract-based mechanisms in 72% of reported business transactions, while trust-based social networks replaced formal institutional channels for 62% of critical information acquisition and decision-making processes. Regression analysis revealed that institutional void severity (β = 0.38), strength of informal networks (β = 0.28), and adaptive management capability (β = 0.26) collectively explained 46% of the variance in firm performance. Comparative analysis further shows that firms which proactively and creatively navigate institutional deficiencies outperform those that merely perceive institutional weakness without strategic adaptation by 34%. These results highlight the centrality of informal institutions and managerial agency in emerging markets, demonstrating that institutional voids, rather than solely constraining firms, can also function as catalysts for innovation in management practices and competitive advantage when effectively leveraged.
