Abstract

This study examines face-threatening acts (FTAs) in workplace email communication across three cultural contexts: British, Indian, and Japanese professional organizations. Drawing on Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness theory and its subsequent cross-cultural extensions, the study investigates how linguistic politeness, indirectness, and mitigation strategies are employed in professional digital discourse. A corpus of 900 workplace emails (300 from each cultural context) was compiled and analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively to examine the frequency, typology, and pragmatic management of FTAs. The findings reveal significant cross-cultural variation in the production and mitigation of FTAs. Japanese workplace emails demonstrate the highest frequency of mitigation strategies, relying heavily on indirectness, honorifics, and formulaic politeness expressions to preserve social harmony and hierarchical sensitivity. In contrast, British emails exhibit the greatest use of bald-on-record directives, reflecting a comparatively low-context communication style and greater tolerance for directness in institutional settings. Indian workplace emails reveal a hybrid pragmatic pattern, combining direct directive forms with culturally embedded mitigation strategies, reflecting ongoing postcolonial linguistic negotiation between Anglo-influenced institutional norms and indigenous sociopragmatic conventions. Statistical analysis confirms that these variations are systematic and culturally conditioned rather than incidental, highlighting the strong influence of sociocultural norms on email pragmatics. The study contributes to intercultural business communication and pragmatics by demonstrating how FTAs are not only linguistic phenomena but also culturally situated interactional strategies. Practically, the findings offer implications for cross-cultural professional training, particularly in enhancing email competence, reducing miscommunication, and improving workplace intercultural sensitivity in globalized organizational environments.
