Abstract

This corpus-based study investigates hedging strategies across four academic disciplines—linguistics, medicine, economics, and engineering—through a combined quantitative and qualitative analysis of 400 research articles (100 per discipline). Grounded in Hyland’s (1996, 1998) framework of hedging and subsequent advancements in metadiscourse theory, the study examines the frequency, structural types, and functional distribution of hedging devices as markers of epistemic stance and disciplinary identity in academic writing. The analysis identifies significant cross-disciplinary variation in both the density and deployment of hedging strategies. Medical research articles demonstrate the highest hedging density, reflecting the cautious interpretation of clinical findings and the ethical necessity of epistemic restraint in health-related claims. In contrast, engineering articles exhibit the lowest frequency of hedging, indicating a greater tendency toward procedural certainty and technical assertiveness. Linguistics and economics occupy intermediate positions, each reflecting distinct epistemological orientations toward argumentation and evidence presentation. Across all disciplines, modal verbs emerge as the most frequently employed hedging device, while lexical hedges such as adverbs and epistemic verbs show greater sensitivity to disciplinary conventions. The findings suggest that hedging is not merely a stylistic feature but a disciplinarily embedded rhetorical strategy shaped by epistemological norms and communicative expectations. This study contributes to academic discourse analysis, genre theory, and English for Academic Purposes (EAP) pedagogy by providing empirical evidence of how disciplinary cultures influence stance-taking in scholarly writing. The results have practical implications for teaching academic writing, particularly in helping novice writers develop discipline-appropriate rhetorical competence.
