Code-Switching as a Pragmatic Resource in Multilingual Classrooms: A Conversation Analytic Study of English, Afrikaans, Xhosa, and Zulu Interaction in Cape Town Schools

Abstract

This study investigates code-switching as a pragmatic resource in multilingual classroom interactions in Cape Town, South Africa. Drawing on translanguaging theory (García & Wei, 2014), conversation analysis (Schegloff, 2007), and sociocultural theories of learning (Vygotsky, 1978; Lantolf, 2000), the research examines how multilingual repertoires are deployed as pedagogical and interactional tools in naturally occurring classroom discourse. The dataset comprises 80 hours of audio-recorded classroom interaction collected from four multilingual schools in which English, Afrikaans, isiXhosa, and isiZulu coexist within the learner population and instructional environment. Using fine-grained interactional analysis, the study identifies eight recurrent functional categories of classroom code-switching: content explanation, procedural clarification, social regulation, evaluative commentary, humor, affective alignment, disciplinary management, and epistemic negotiation. Findings demonstrate that code-switching is systematically embedded in the organization of classroom talk and serves to facilitate comprehension, maintain classroom order, and support learner engagement rather than functioning as random or deficient language mixing. The analysis further shows that teachers and learners strategically alternate languages to scaffold learning, manage interpersonal relationships, and index solidarity or authority depending on interactional context. These results challenge deficit-oriented perspectives that frame code-switching as interference or linguistic failure, instead supporting translanguaging-oriented accounts that conceptualize multilingual speech as an integrated semiotic system. The study contributes to applied linguistics, classroom discourse analysis, and multilingual education research by reconceptualizing code-switching as a pedagogically productive and interactionally sophisticated resource. The findings have important implications for language-in-education policy and teacher training in multilingual settings, particularly in contexts where rigid language separation policies fail to reflect actual communicative practices.
