Abstract

The translation of culturally specific concepts presents one of the greatest challenges in literary translation, often requiring translators to balance textual accessibility with the preservation of cultural authenticity. This study examines translator strategies for addressing cultural untranslatability in English translations of contemporary Arabic literary fiction by analyzing the use of footnotes, endnotes, and glossary entries as paratextual devices for explaining culturally opaque expressions. The research is informed by Genette's (1997) theory of paratextuality, Venuti's (1995) concept of translator visibility, and Nord's (2005) functionalist approach to translation. A corpus of 14 English translations of Arabic novels published between 2000 and 2022, including works by Naguib Mahfouz, Hanan al-Shaykh, Elias Khoury, and Khaled Hosseini, was examined using a mixed-methods corpus-based design. Quantitative analysis documented the frequency and distribution of paratextual elements across translators, publishing houses, and literary genres, while qualitative content analysis explored the communicative functions and discursive characteristics of explanatory notes. The findings revealed considerable variation in translators' use of paratextual strategies, reflecting differing translation philosophies regarding cultural mediation and reader engagement. Footnotes constituted the most frequently employed paratextual device and were classified into three primary functional categories: lexical explanation (48%), cultural context provision (33%), and intertextual commentary (19%). Lexical explanations primarily clarified culturally bound terms and idiomatic expressions, whereas contextual notes provided historical, religious, and sociocultural background necessary for comprehension. Intertextual commentary was used more selectively to explain literary, religious, and historical references that extended beyond the immediate narrative. Comparative analysis indicated that translators adopting more visible translation strategies employed a greater number of explanatory notes, encouraging readers to engage actively with the source culture, while translators favoring domestication relied on fewer paratextual interventions. These patterns suggest that paratextual choices reflect broader ideological positions concerning reader responsibility, cultural learning, and the preservation of linguistic and cultural difference. The study contributes to translation studies and postcolonial literary scholarship by demonstrating how paratextual strategies function as important mediators of intercultural communication and influence readers' interpretation of translated Arabic literature.
